SHEEPSHEAD BAY, Brooklyn — Residents on a Brooklyn block woke up Tuesday morning to a messy surprise. A water main burst overnight. It flooded homes with water and mud.

The affected area is between Emmons Avenue and Shore Parkway. It was left covered in a layer of frozen mud. The pipe gave way around 2:30 a.m., sending water into garages and first-floor apartments.

“This morning, I woke up around 5 a.m. I started walking through my house. There’s a puddle in the middle of my living room,” said resident Elan Samarin. “And then I turn the lights on. Everything is covered in mud. And it was a mess.”

Another resident, Amir Aslamov, shared how his grandmother in the basement was startled awake by the noise of the flooding. “She saw the water coming in,” he said.

City officials have yet to announce how long cleanup and repairs will take. Residents are advised to avoid the affected block until conditions improve.
