NEW YORK — Ten days have passed since last week’s record-breaking snowstorm. New York City sanitation crews are still working around the clock. They are clearing streets, sidewalks, and fire hydrants. Temperatures remain below freezing.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported that crews have cleared over 52,000 crosswalks. They have also cleared 11,000 fire hydrants and 17,000 bus stops. Additionally, more than 150 million pounds of snow have been melted citywide. Despite the ongoing efforts, the heavy snow and extended deep freeze have left lingering challenges for residents.

Alternate Side Parking rules remain suspended through Sunday. This gives New Yorkers extra time to dig out their vehicles. Residents should prepare before another cold front hits. Officials urge residents to take advantage of the temporary reprieve. This prevents damage to their cars. It also ensures safe street access.

Cobble Hill resident Alan Grotheer said, “I came about three days ago, and it was like dealing with rock. I knew it was going to stay a while.” Many New Yorkers are helping themselves and their neighborhoods by clearing snow around hydrants and walkways.

Acting DSNY Commissioner Javier Lojan explained that frozen snow and ice slow the process. “It’s like trying to chop through rock. That slows down progress, but our crews remain committed to keeping the city running safely.”

Sanitation crews are working 12-hour shifts. They are using snow melters alongside traditional plowing and shoveling. However, the extreme cold has turned cleanup into a marathon rather than a sprint. City officials advise residents to remain patient and to comply with safety precautions while digging out.
