A weekend encounter in Minneapolis ended tragically when federal officers fatally shot ICU nurse Alex Pretti. The incident raises urgent questions about law enforcement and accountability.

Officers tried to take Pretti into custody, but he resisted. A struggle broke out, and two officers fired their guns. A Border Patrol agent repeatedly shouted, “He’s got a gun!” during the incident.

CBP reviewed body-camera footage and agency documentation. By law, Congress must be notified within 72 hours of any death in federal custody.

The situation worsened when Ecuador’s foreign minister objected after agents allegedly tried to enter the city’s consulate without permission.

Tensions rose further when a man sprayed U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar with an unknown substance at a town hall. She had just called for abolishing ICE. The administration sent its border chief to Minnesota to “de-escalate” tensions.

Black men have long been killed for holding ordinary objects, like phones or wallets, without national outrage. Yet some tragedies spark sudden attention. The question remains: whose lives are protected?
