I Couldn’t Help But Wonder… Who Takes Care of the Caregivers?

I was on my way past Mount Sinai when I noticed something unusual—not the sirens, not the stretchers, not the rush we’ve all come to expect from a New York hospital—but nurses standing still.

Outside.

Together.

Holding signs instead of charts.

And I couldn’t help but wonder: what happens when the people trained to stay calm finally say, “We can’t do this quietly anymore”?

These were the same nurses who showed up when the city was afraid to touch doorknobs. The same ones who learned our names, our allergies, our worst days. Today, they weren’t asking for praise. They were asking for support.

Staffing. Safety. Sustainability.

Big words for a very simple truth: care works best when caregivers aren’t exhausted.

As cars passed and pedestrians slowed, it felt like the city paused—just long enough to listen.

And maybe that’s the point.

If nurses are speaking up, perhaps it’s time we all lean in.

We want to hear from you.
