WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson faces a procedural vote Tuesday aimed at ending the partial government shutdown that began Saturday. The legislation would fund most federal agencies through September 30. It would also provide a two-week extension for the Department of Homeland Security. This extension is to allow lawmakers to negotiate longer-term adjustments.

The President emphasized that no changes should be made to the proposal. Johnson stressed the need for near-unanimous Republican support to proceed. Democrats are expected to support the final measure. However, the procedural vote is the first major test for the Speaker.
