MILAN, Italy — Haiti sent two athletes to the Milan Cortina Winter Games. This marks a significant moment for the tropical nation on the global winter sports stage.

Italian-Haitian designer Stella Jean created the official uniforms, which originally featured an image of Toussaint Louverture. The International Olympic Committee required modifications to remove political imagery, citing rules against propaganda at Olympic events.

Despite the change, Haitian officials celebrated the symbolic importance of their athletes’ participation. “Absence is the most dangerous form of erasing,” Haiti’s ambassador to Italy, Gandy Thomas, said. The uniforms and athletes represent resilience in a nation. This nation has faced political unrest, gang violence, and social upheaval in recent years.
