Highlight of the Week: Meet NYC’s New Jamaican Superintendent!

We’re back from hiatus — refreshed, recharged, and ready to bring you more stories that move the culture forward.

And this week, we’re starting with a major celebration of excellence and representation in education. Dr. Rushell White, born in Yallahs, St. Thomas, Jamaica, has just been appointed Interim Acting Superintendent for New York City Public Schools — overseeing more than 47 schools, 27,000 students, and 6,000 staff in northern Brooklyn.

Dr. White’s story is one of faith, focus, and fierce dedication. She came to Brooklyn at eight years old, went on to become a teacher, principal, and now superintendent — all while championing immigrant students and culturally responsive teaching.

Her doctoral research on Psychological Safety and English-Speaking Caribbean Students in NYC Schools proves what we’ve always believed: representation matters, and leadership grounded in community changes lives.

As Dr. White puts it, she’s “filled with pure joy and ready to serve.” Her priorities include:

  • Building stronger student and family engagement.
  • Boosting literacy and math outcomes.
  • Creating classrooms that honor culture and identity.

For the Caribbean and Harlem communities, this is a proud moment — a reminder that our stories and voices belong at every table.

So as The Morning Show returns, we’re doing what we do best: spotlighting the people who keep our cities thriving, our schools strong, and our culture rooted in purpose.

Welcome back, family — we’ve got a powerful season ahead.
