MASPETH, Queens — City officials are promoting a new worker leave law. It guarantees employees 32 hours of unpaid leave. This leave starts from the beginning of the year or the start of a job.
The mayor met with delivery workers in Queens ahead of the law taking effect this weekend. He said many employees are unaware of their legal time-off rights.
The city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will begin compliance checks. There are concerns that workers may face retaliation for using leave. City leaders say the measure is meant to help employees manage family and health needs without risking their jobs.
