NEW YORK — Technology is evolving at breakneck speed. New York City’s Fire Department is embracing robotics. They are doing this to enhance safety and efficiency on the front lines. The FDNY’s robotics team is considered one of the best in the world. They are now using high-tech devices, from drones to robotic dogs. These devices support firefighters and protect New Yorkers.
The department’s two robotic dogs were introduced in 2022. They are designed for specific hazardous scenarios. These include potential subway terror attacks or structurally compromised buildings. So far, the robots have been deployed in one major emergency. It was a deadly garage collapse in Manhattan’s Financial District in 2023.

Captain Mike Leo of the FDNY explained the importance of these devices. “These robots extend our capabilities in ways humans simply cannot safely achieve. They allow us to assess dangerous areas remotely. They gather critical information. Ultimately, they save lives without putting firefighters directly in harm’s way,” he said.
Beyond the robotic dogs, the department uses drones for aerial reconnaissance, thermal imaging, and rapid assessment during large-scale incidents. The technology provides real-time data that informs tactical decisions, streamlines operations, and reduces the risk to personnel.
The department emphasizes that the use of robotics does not replace human firefighters but complements their work. “Technology is a tool, not a replacement,” Leo said. “Our firefighters remain at the heart of everything we do. However, these devices give us an edge in unpredictable, high-risk situations.”
The FDNY robotics program will be highlighted in a special feature. Operation 7: Save a Life will air on Saturday, February 7, at 7:00 p.m. This feature offers viewers a closer look at how innovation is transforming emergency response in New York City.
