Former CNN anchor Don Lemon was arrested by federal authorities Friday. This was in connection with a protest tied to a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, according to statements from the U.S. Attorney General’s office.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X. Lemon was taken into custody alongside three other journalists. This was “in connection with the coordinated attack on Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota.” Details surrounding the alleged incident have not been fully disclosed.
Lemon’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, confirmed the arrest. He said federal agents took Lemon into custody in Los Angeles. Lemon was covering the Grammy Awards at the time of his arrest.

“Instead of investigating the federal agents who killed two peaceful Minnesota protesters, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention and resources to this arrest, and that is the real indictment of wrongdoing in this case,” Lowell said in a statement. “This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand.”
Lowell added that Lemon intends to challenge the charges. “Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court,” he said.
Sources familiar with the case reported this issue. A federal magistrate judge had previously rejected a criminal complaint related to the matter. The same sources described Bondi as “enraged” by that decision.
No further information has been released regarding the specific charges or the identities of the other journalists allegedly arrested. Lemon has not commented publicly since his arrest.
The case is expected to draw renewed scrutiny over press freedoms. It will also focus on the treatment of journalists during protests. Additionally, the role of federal authorities in responding to demonstrations tied to religious and political tensions will be examined.
